It's a requirement here in the EU. I have one mounted in the 520d.

I carry an ABC when touring, but day to day? no.

Brian Silvestro does. I know because he just gave me a ride home and I couldn't move my seat back because he had a fire extinguisher in the way.

My MGA attempted to self-immolate once in the past (a blocked float chamber vent, and a stuck float conspired to make fuel spill out of the carb and onto the exhaust manifold), and has come close on many other occasions. As a result, I keep a small extinguisher right next to the battery kill switch. The vent holes in the front wings mean that I could conceivably use an extinguisher on the engine bay without the risk of opening the bonnet.

I've never bothered with one in my 'normal' cars, though.

Yup, that was the first thing I bought when I got my car - before gas, even. Given that my car is 44 years old and carbeurated, it just made sense.

When I was 12ish a van a couple cars ahead of us on the freeway rolled over and caught fire. The dude in front of us had a fire extinguisher, and put the thing out while my friends' dad and another guy pulled the surviving passenger out. Some fucked up shit, but made me realize that a fire extinguisher is worth the 5 pounds to carry around behind my seat.

I don't now because I'm not driving an air cooled bug, but I've had two road going bugs and both needed to be extinguished, really.

No. But I carry a first aid kit and a reflective device that you deploy to give others warning if you are on the side of the road.

Yup, because my car may or may not leak a bit of gas around one or two injectors. It makes me feel better to have an extinguisher.

Yes, but I probably need to get a new one.. this one's a few years old at this point. Those things do have a shelf life. Also planning on getting my wife's car one in the near future.

Yes. I have a 2.5lb dry chemical ABC extinguisher in the storage kit in the spare tire well of my Subaru wagon. It's not exactly quick access, but it's quick enough.

I don't really expect my Subaru to catch fire; I keep one handy mostly in case I need to extinguish someone elses' car. Otherwise I'd upgrade to a halotron (or whatever the new halon 1211 replacement is) extinguisher.

In my Subaru, no. Being a newer car the likelihood of it self-igniting is probably pretty low. Although if I had an extra one lying around, or if I had the brain cells to have ordered a second one when I bought my first (see below) it wouldn't hurt to do so.

In my E30, yup. I've had various electrical issues over the years, engine overheated, fuel filter leak. None of these things actually lead to any kind of smoke or fire - but with an older car prone to such things, certainly advisable to do so I'd say.

It would suck to be helplessly waving my hands on the side of the road as I watched my baby burn into an ash.

I never have, but because of this thread I will probably put one in the 4x4 this spring as part of my safety and recovery kit.

Not in many years, no. I did when I had my old Super Beetle though, because 30 year old wiring.

Kinja'd!!!

Did you have to buy a new one? Was it hard to find?

Friend of mine is a manager in a VW dealer. An Amarok came in today after starting a small fire. The ABC extinguisher obviously wasn't enough and they only put it out when 3 other people gave the ones in their cars.

Makes me question their usefulness.

I've put one in front of the passenger seat in my old Land Cruiser, easily reachable from the driver seat (at least for me).

I need to find a good spot in the 4Runner

I keep a 5lb one in my trunk. Not for me, but for whoever else happens to be on fire. When I was on a road trip headed to Bonneville, I saw an RV engulfed in flame, while the family stood on the shoulder next to it, watching it burn to the ground. Too big of a fire for an extinguisher by that point, but had they caught it earlier, they might not have lost it. I think it was then that I mentally decided that it was a good idea to carry one.

Have a 2.5lb H3R Maxout mounted on the roll bar of my jeep, doesn't take up enough room not to carry it day to day and possibly useful in the event of someone ending wrong side up on the trail.

I keep one in all my cars and 2 in the bus. My Mustang exhaust tried to catch the rear seat afire several years back and I've had one in every car since. Why cause nothing I own is stock. The Mustang has a one off exhaust. The Eldorado has over a mile of additional wiring (a tenth of which is 14V off a 280Amp alternator). The LSD racing car has 24 pounds of boost and 4 gallons of pure alcohol. I'm lucky I had mine in the bus cause a few days after I found it, one of the back brakes froze and caught fire (it is almost 40 year old bus).
